Thermoplastic Composites in the News: Qualified TCP Flowlines, EV Battery Shift and CAMX 2026 Rollouts

Thermoplastic UD tape rolls — the tape format at the heart of TCP flowlines, EV battery enclosures and CAMX 2026 launches

Thermoplastic composites kept moving across applications this week: a carbon fiber/PA12 flowline cleared full third-party qualification for ultra-deepwater service, EV battery enclosures are switching from thermoset to thermoplastic at scale, and CAMX 2026 brought new UD tape and laminate rollouts. Here is the roundup buyers should know.

Deepwater TCP flowline qualified: 6-inch CF/PA12 line for Brazil pre-salt

Strohm (Netherlands), with Petrobras and Shell, completed a full-scale qualification and offshore field trial program for a 6-inch carbon fiber/PA12 thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP). The line was qualified to DNV-ST-F119, including water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection service for enhanced oil recovery, accumulating more than 50,000 test hours (~6 calendar years) and 40+ full-scale tests across seven laboratories and certification bodies in Europe and Brazil. Deep-sea immersion and subsea vertical connection trials were completed in July 2026.

  • Designed for Brazil’s pre-salt, high-CO2 environment — a corrosion-stress-cracking pain point for conventional flexible pipe.
  • 30-year design life; installable with existing pipelay vessels without modification.
  • Petrobras’ Brazil pilot project installation is scheduled for early 2027; material testing was performed by supplier Evonik.

EV battery enclosures: the thermoset-to-thermoplastic shift accelerates

CompositesWorld’s annual End Markets: Batteries and Fuel Cells 2026 report documents accelerating adoption of thermoplastic composites in EV battery housings, covers and intrusion plates:

  • Kautex Textron Pentatonic TPC battery platform (glass/PP or PA6 laminates with LFT-PP overmolding, 2 m² bottom tray) won a high-volume EV platform CTP contract — on the road for MY2027.
  • Röchling Automotive started 2026 production of UD glass-fiber TPC sandwich intrusion protection plates for a European OEM multi-platform program.
  • FibreCoat (with Forward Engineering and Coleitec) showcased the AluCoat aluminum-coated basalt fiber fabric battery enclosure at JEC World 2026 — metal-foil-free EMI shielding with passive cooling.
  • Trinseo’s DLFT-PC battery cover passed the GB 38031 fire test; composite bipolar plates reached 7.5 kW/kg power density (+81% vs. graphite), about 75% of stack weight and ~30% of cost.

CAMX 2026: new UD tape and laminate product rollouts

Two product families at CAMX 2026 (Atlanta, September 21–24) are directly relevant to buyers of continuous-fiber intermediates:

  • Metyx expanded its thermoplastic portfolio: Metytape UD tapes (glass/carbon/hybrid in PP/PA/PE matrices), Metyply cross-ply laminates with tailored fiber orientation, and Metypan lightweight sandwich panels — plus structural solutions using recycled materials.
  • Avient added new PA6-based Polystrand UD tapes (50–70% glass, 2–25 in widths; laminates 50–120 in) for transportation and consumer structures, launched simulation-ready material cards for its PP-based continuous glass tapes, raised PET-based tape temperature resistance to 85°C, and extended Complēt LFT with UV-stabilized and pre-colored single-pellet options.

One-piece TPC RV sidewalls: moving builders beyond wood

US-based Tekmodo added seamless thermoplastic sidewalls to its one-piece RV roof and floor line, completing a full floor-to-roof TPC panel system. The company’s wide-format lamination produces continuous, joint-free panels up to 120 inches wide and 50 feet long. TPC panels are hydrophobic, non-absorbing, rot- and mildew-resistant; the roof is about 28% lighter than 9 mm plywood with ~34% higher bending strength.

LFT processing review: injection molding breaks fibers, compression retains them

A new review of long-fiber thermoplastic (LFT) processing links process, microstructure and performance:

  • Injection molding’s high shear shortens fibers from 10–25 mm to 2–3 mm; compression molding retains fibers better (charge placement and mold coverage strongly influence orientation).
  • D-LFT integrates melting, fiber feeding and compounding in a continuous process, cutting energy and cost.
  • Automotive accounts for ~80% of global LFT consumption: PP/GF LFT front longitudinal beams cut weight 25–40% and consolidate 18–25 parts into 3–4 (stiffness kept at 450–600 N/mm); carbon-fiber LFT lightens steel guards by ~40%.
  • Numerical simulation (mold flow + μCT + FEA) remains the key challenge for fatigue and creep prediction.

Low-altitude economy: why thermoplastic is argued to be the scale-up route

China’s October 2026 policy document on new quality productive forces elevated the low-altitude economy to an “emerging pillar industry.” Industry estimates cited in a vendor viewpoint article put composites at 70–80% of eVTOL structural weight and carbon fiber use at 100–400 kg per aircraft (about 97 kg for a 2-seater, ~363 kg for a 5-seater). The core argument: eVTOL requires aerospace-grade performance at automotive cost and mass-production cycle times, and thermoplastic composites — minute-level forming vs. hours of thermoset cure, plus weldability and recyclability — are presented as the route that satisfies both scale and cost. (Vendor viewpoint; readers should verify underlying data for their own programs.)

Hydrogen storage in the news: Type IV vessels and winding metering systems

Two China signals on the hydrogen storage side: Shaanxi Hydrogen Storage Equipment displayed Type IV vessels (8L/25L/215L) — its 215L onboard vessel supports 80–100 km of range per fill for hydrogen heavy trucks — and Shanghai Winnow launched a two-component metering/mixing system for composite pressure vessel filament winding (mix ratios 10:1 to 1:1, ±1% control accuracy, closed-loop flow control, vacuum degassing, production data logged every 2 seconds with 6+ months of traceability).

Recycled carbon update: continuous rCF tow fabrics at $5–6/kg

CCIC (Changzhou) and the University of Nottingham Ningbo presented their full-loop recycled carbon fiber platform (SAMPE China 2026). Their ContRGF process converts fragmented rCF into continuous 12K–48K tow fabrics with tensile strength 2.0–3.5 GPa and modulus 200–350 GPa, meeting China’s T/CSTM 00882-2023 large-tow carbon fiber standard — at a cost of about 35 CNY/kg (~$5–6/kg), well below virgin fiber at $11–17.5/kg. This is a useful cost-performance benchmark as continuous rCF enters mainstream fabric and prepreg supply chains.
