- Industrial components requiring chemical resistance
- Sporting goods with high impact requirements
For Sporting Goods and Consumer Products
Sports equipment is where thermoplastic prepreg earns its premium: short moulding cycles for volume production, a recyclability story you can put in the product copy, and impact behaviour that thermoset laminates find hard to match. The matrix choice matters more than the fibre here — the same carbon fibre behaves very differently in PP, PA6 and PEEK.
| Part | Typical system | Why this system |
|---|---|---|
| Bicycle frames, stays, forks | CF/PA6, CF/PC | Fast cycle, fatigue resistance, recyclable at end of life |
| Helmets and protective shells | CF/PP, CF/PA6 | Tough matrix absorbs impact energy instead of shattering |
| Racket frames, shafts, poles | CF/PEEK, CF/PA12 | High stiffness at low weight, high service temperature |
| Ski, snowboard and skate structures | GF/PP, GF/PA6 | Cost-effective stiffness with low-temperature toughness |
| Water sports: paddles, fins, foils | CF/PA6, GF/PA6 | Water resistance and repairability |
What to compare before you specify: fibre content (our UD tapes run 55–70% by weight), consolidated ply thickness (0.08–0.16 mm depending on system), moulding temperature (about 200–230 °C for PP, 280–320 °C for PC and PA6, up to 340–390 °C for PPS and PEEK), and whether the part has to be recyclable at end of life. Thermoplastic systems consolidate in minutes rather than the hours an autoclave cure takes — that is where the cost advantage comes from at volume. See the sports and leisure page for application notes, or send us the part drawing and target cycle time.
Processing
Hot press, compression molding, diaphragm forming and automated tape placement with short cycle times; fully recyclable systems available. For melt temperature, pressure and cycle time by resin system, and the four failure modes to watch for, see Thermoplastic Prepreg Processing Window.
FAQ
Can thermoplastic prepregs be recycled? Yes — this is a key advantage over thermoset systems, particularly PP and PA-based grades.
