October 22’s industry reports carry two policy threads, three application shifts and one supply-side signal relevant to composites buyers. Highlights below.
1. Carbon fiber composites enter China’s rail innovation plan
The National Railway Administration’s “15th Five-Year” Rail Science and Technology Innovation Plan (issued Oct 12) explicitly names carbon fiber composites and basalt fiber among the high-performance lightweight materials to be researched for railway engineering, and lists “green smart materials application” as a key program. Rail certification cycles are long and standards are strict — suppliers should track upcoming project tenders and start sample validation early. (gov.cn)
2. PET long-fiber underbody plates: Li Auto i8 is first, Tier-1s are building lines
Li Auto’s i8 carries a PET continuous-fiber fully wrapped underbody shield; Li Auto previously co-developed domestic CFRT (continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic) material for fuel-tank underbody shields with Lørüser and Freerika. Ningbo Huaxiang, Yanfeng and other Tier-1 suppliers are now installing PET long-fiber hot-press lines. PET long-fiber plates cut weight ~40% vs steel/aluminum; the consensus is that material is proven and the bottleneck has moved to hot-pressing temperature control. (163.com)
3. eVTOL “all-carbon” airframes go from concept to production
AVIC-backed Shenzhen Qingkuai World says it has entered 28 eVTOL supply chains with roughly 80% share of prepreg for passenger eVTOL (still small-batch validation). CRRC Molding Technology’s Weihai unit has transferred high-speed-rail composite know-how to drones, delivering 200+ structural kits; carbon shells reported ~30% lighter and integrated motor housings ~45% lighter. Airworthiness certification remains the biggest gate. (10jqka)
4. Long-carbon-fiber PA6: a metal-replacement path from 70 MPa to 300 MPa
Technical notes on 50% long-carbon-fiber PA6: tensile strength >298 MPa, flexural modulus >23 GPa, HDT >208°C at 1.8 MPa — targeting structural brackets, crash-absorbers and aviation-adjacent parts. Process care: injection fiber breakage (low-compression screws, lower RPM) and PA6 moisture (85°C pre-drying). Thermoplastic matrix is recyclable, aligning with EU ELV direction. (163.com)
5. HI!-PLASTICS 2026 (Valencia): thermoplastic-over-thermoset becomes the European consensus
The first AIMPLAS-hosted HI!-PLASTICS symposium (Oct 9–10) covered advanced plastics for automotive, construction and energy. Conference signal: thermoplastic composites — via faster processing, weldability and recyclability — are becoming the credible substitute for thermoset in high-volume applications; self-reinforced polymers and CPR fire-safety compliance are the next focus. 6. LIFE BIOBCOMPO: plant-fiber bio-composites reach European series production
SAPA with Stellantis and CRF developed a low-density plant-fiber (cellulose) reinforced thermoplastic bio-composite now in production on the Lancia Ypsilon dashboard (~10,000 vehicles since 2022). It weighs ~8% less than mineral-filled materials, carries ~20% non-fossil cellulose fiber and is recyclable at end of life. (CINEA)
7. Trade: EU’s “301-style” risk rises; China opens anti-dumping case on EU chemicals
Ahead of the high-level EU–China trade talks, signals of an EU “301-like” investigation are strengthening; MOFCOM on Oct 3 opened an anti-dumping case on EU-origin para-nitrotoluene (EU import prices fell nearly 60% over 2022–2025). The EU has launched 28 trade-remedy investigations against China since 2025, about half in chemicals. Buyers exporting composites/resins to the EU should pre-review anti-dumping and compliance exposure. (HK China News Agency)
8. Trade: German council rejects the “China shock” narrative; EU–China trade +14.2%
Germany’s Economic Advisory Council report opposes framing Chinese competition as a “China shock”, defends open markets and warns against protectionist anti-dumping/anti-subsidy paths. Data: 2026H1 EU–China goods trade $447.8B, +14.2% YoY; Siemens’ CEO, Slovakia’s PM and Spain’s PM have publicly opposed blanket tariffs on China. (ce.cn)
