Semi-Preg Towpregs, Toughening Films and a Turning Carbon Fiber Market: October 2026 Roundup

Thermoplastic UD tape roll — the family of intermediate materials behind the new semi-preg towpreg and toughening-film launches at CAMX 2026

After several days of quiet, two genuinely new industry threads landed this week: fresh thermoplastic intermediate products surfaced from the CAMX 2026 show floor coverage, and a Chinese brokerage published a data-rich read on the carbon fiber cycle that points to an inflection. Here is what changed and why it matters for composites buyers.

1. Concordia’s semi-preg commingled thermoplastic towpreg (CAMX 2026)

US-based Concordia Engineered Fibers (founded 1920, ISO 9001, plants in the US, France and Mexico) launched a semi-preg commingled continuous-fiber thermoplastic towpreg positioned between traditional commingled towpregs and fully consolidated prepregs. The goal: lower material volume while keeping better flexibility than prepreg, enabling more uniform ply build-up, flexible fabric architectures and easier handling. A constant cross-section design improves lay-up precision and protects the tows through downstream processing.

Process compatibility is broad — weaving, braiding, tailored fiber placement (TFP), AFP, additive manufacturing, pultrusion and filament winding. The material is recyclable and remoldable. Resin coverage spans PET, PETG, PC, PPS, PEI, PEEK, LMPAEK, PA6, PA11, PA12 and custom combinations, with fibers from carbon, glass, UHMWPE, PTFE to metal fibers.

Buyer takeaway: commingled towpregs are a real alternative to fully impregnated UD tapes and prepregs — better drapability and weaving adaptability, at the cost of impregnation speed and porosity control. If your program needs woven or braided architectures with thermoplastic matrices, this family is worth comparing head-to-head against consolidated prepreg.

2. L&L Products’ Toughened T-Link F-620 thermoplastic adhesive film (CAMX 2026)

L&L Products (Romeo, Michigan, US) introduced Toughened T-Link F-620, a 1 mm fully amorphous thermoplastic adhesive film for interlayer toughening of carbon fiber/epoxy laminates and bonding of dissimilar materials (metal–composite hybrids). It stores at room temperature, handles dry, consolidates quickly, and conforms to deep-draw and complex parts.

Test panels bonded with F-620 and epoxy prepreg showed a +66% improvement in compression-after-impact strength (ASTM D7137) and significantly improved short-beam shear (ASTM D2344). Forms include pellets, micropellets, film, with yarn and monofilament under development. Being thermoplastic, it also supports heated disassembly, reprocessing and recycling. The same booth showed its InsituCore in-situ foaming core (3D net-shape parts from a closed mold plus heat, no foam machining or secondary bonding).

Buyer takeaway: interlayer toughening film is the mainstream fix for the CAI weakness of thin laminates — a reference solution whether you specify film separately or ask your laminate supplier to integrate it.

3. Carbon fiber: market bottom signals (brokerage report, Oct 21)

Guosen Securities’ carbon fiber sector update (Oct 21) reads the industry as still in a “performance upgrade + application expansion” phase, with prices suppressed by capacity but leaders regaining pricing power through differentiation. Key data:

  • 2026H1 capacity utilization recovered to 66%–71%, with sharp divergence between companies.
  • Zhongfu Shenying: 2025 sales volume >25,000 t (+54.5%), unit production cost −12%, swung to a non-GAAP net profit of RMB 69M (vs a RMB 185M loss in 2024); high-end M-series and T1000+ grades remain supply-constrained; 31,000 t of capacity under construction for 2026.
  • Jilin Chemical Fiber: 2025 sales volume 15,200 t (+188%); roughly 90% domestic share of carbon plates for wind-turbine spar caps.
  • Guangwei Composites: gross margin sustained above 35%; military orders recovering since 2025H2; C919/C929 prepreg qualification progressing.

Buyer takeaway: the window for aggressive price declines is narrowing. For long-cycle quotes, building in raw-material headroom is prudent; and the differentiation story (performance / cycle time / recyclability rather than pure price) is exactly the argument that applies to thermoplastic composites.
