Thermoplastic Airframe Hybrids, Type IV Hydrogen Tank Demos, Glass-Fibre Expansion and EU Trade Monitoring: Composites Digest, 28 Oct 2026

Welcome to the LX Composites daily digest for 28 October 2026, covering objective industry and policy developments relevant to thermoplastic and fibre-reinforced composites. Highlights: Airbus-supplier Asco’s hybrid thermoplastic/metal rear fuselage structure for a next-generation single-aisle programme, seven sustainable-composite demonstration projects (including Type IV hydrogen tanks) presented by Luxembourg’s LIST, glass-fibre capacity expansion at China Jushi, drone airframe deliveries and airworthiness progress in carbon fibre, plus new EU import-monitoring and export-control policy signals.

Hybrid thermoplastic/metal rear fuselage structure for next-generation Airbus single-aisle

Asco Industries (Montana Aerospace group, Belgium) has presented a full-scale demonstrator of a hybrid rear fuselage secondary structure for Airbus’ next-generation single-aisle aircraft in Toulouse. The part combines a carbon-fibre skin produced by RTM, aluminium/titanium interface fittings, a thermoplastic frame and injection-moulded thermoplastic parts, targeting weight reduction and lower assembly cost with a plug-and-play architecture suited to high-rate production. The programme stems from a 2022 Airbus–Asco cooperation agreement; two full-scale prototypes are planned for 2026, after which Airbus will continue evaluation at complete-pylon level.

LIST presents seven sustainable-composite demo projects at SCMM Industry Day 2026

At SCMM Industry Day 2026, Luxembourg’s LIST showcased seven projects (TRL 5–6) accelerating industrial adoption of sustainable composites. Hydrogen storage: Type IV tanks (11 L and 62 L prototypes) produced by filament winding with recyclable resin passed burst tests, with research into recovery of continuous carbon fibre after tank end-of-life. Aerospace: an A320 cabin frame in glass-fibre/thermoset sandwich developed with Airbus and Euro-Composites combining FST performance and recyclability; an aluminium–carbon-fibre hybrid door hinge (carbon deposited by robotic additive manufacturing) reported about 20% weight reduction. Further projects include bamboo-fibre reinforced PP injection-moulded parts (over 100 kg of material produced for testing), flax-fibre automotive panels (thermoforming + RTM with thermoplastic matrix), and bus seat frames made with Aksa Carbon pultruded carbon scrap together with Iveco Bus (about 80 kg saved per set). LIST states the demos are a step toward industrial evaluation, not an end of R&D.

China Jushi raises Chengdu glass-fibre project investment to RMB 2.748bn and shortens build-out to 2 years

Jushi Group Chengdu has revised the 200,000 t/y high-performance glass-fibre line project: total investment increases from RMB 2.348bn to 2.748bn (higher precious-metal costs plus intelligent-upgrade investment), and the construction period is shortened from 3 to 2 years. Funding is from own and self-raised sources; the change was approved by the 35th board meeting. In October the company adjusted e-fabric prices with satisfactory execution, maintained low e-fabric inventory with tight supply, and stated that 2027 supply growth of e-fabrics will struggle to match downstream demand growth, constrained by capital, furnace build cycles and delivery bottlenecks for high-end looms. The Huaian 100,000 t/y zero-carbon smart e-glass line reached full production; Jushi identifies wind power and new-energy-vehicle thermoplastics as the most important growth downstreams for its roving segment.

Drone airframe deliveries and airworthiness progress in carbon fibre

Jinggong Composites (Zhejiang Jinggong Integrated Technology) has delivered a batch of carbon-fibre composite structural parts for industrial drones covering inspection, mapping and emergency scenarios from its Shaoxing plant; the site previously developed honeycomb-core composite structures for a leading industrial drone maker, with 32% weight reduction on parts. Hengshen Co. and Hangzhou Dazhaofeng jointly developed the Kunyu 1000 all-self-developed carbon-fibre cargo drone, which has entered airworthiness certification. The report also notes automated forming as the current competitive focus in low-altitude composites, citing a fully automated ENGEL thermoplastic drone-blade line with cycle times under 60 seconds.

EU launches trade-risk monitoring for 902 import product lines — a candidate pool, not a sanction list

The EU has screened 902 categories of imported products by CN8 codes into a dynamic trade-risk monitoring system covering automotive, batteries, chemicals, machinery, steel, aluminium, electronics and new energy. Official language stresses this is not a fixed sanction list; products can be added or removed. The self-check logic combines four criteria — rapidly growing export volume to the EU, persistently declining export prices, clearly rising Chinese market share, and a large number of comparable EU producers — with signals from European industry associations and existing EU measures on similar products. The article notes EU compliance is shifting from product-level rules (REACH, RoHS, ELV, battery regulation, PPWR, CE) to supply-chain-level compliance covering origin, supply chain, customs data, carbon, subsidies, production costs and trade-defence risk.

France and Germany reportedly drafting an EU economic-security tool paper; CCCME issues statement

Following media reports that France and Germany are preparing a joint paper calling on the European Commission to strengthen the EU’s trade and economic-security instruments, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) issued a statement of high concern. It notes a recent wave of restrictive legislative and administrative measures in the EU and a clear trend of trade protectionism, argues such measures do not improve EU industrial competitiveness and instead harm mutually beneficial cooperation and supply-chain stability, and calls on the EU to resolve differences through intergovernmental consultation and industry dialogue.

China–US reciprocal tariff reduction framework; EU’s three layers of trade constraints

US side: according to CITIC Construction Investment export research, the 2026 forced-labour-related Section 301 investigation began in March and produced final measures in July, indicating new tariffs generally carry policy lead-time, while existing 301/232 measures can still be adjusted. China and the US have reached consensus on trade council working procedures, the reciprocal tariff-reduction framework document and the product list, with roughly 90% of relevant products proposed to move to MFN rates, pending domestic legal procedures in both countries. EU side: three layers apply — traditional trade defence (anti-subsidy duties of 7.8%–35.3% on Chinese BEVs; anti-dumping duties of EUR 0.25–0.74/kg on titanium dioxide), carbon-cost instruments (CBAM formally in force since 1 Jan 2026, cost depending on embedded emissions, certificate prices and allowances, varying within HS groups), and standards/compliance constraints (battery regulation carbon footprint, labelling, battery passport, recycling and supply-chain management).

Export-control policy window check: no new notices since 20 Oct; MOFCOM notices 49/50/51 effective 18 Nov

A check of MOFCOM’s policy and government-information directories (28 Oct) confirms the latest control notices remain Nos. 49 (drone-related items), 50 (shield machines etc.) and 51 (dredgers), all effective from 18 Nov; Notice 52 (optimising questions and identification for dual-use item export controls) was issued 19 Oct and is already in force. For carbon-fibre composite products, clause 9A901.c of Notice 49 covers propeller blades: fixed-pitch blades whose structure passes through the rotation centre with centre-to-tip length at or above 762 mm, or blades not passing the centre with root-to-tip length at or above 648 mm, or blades with pitch-adjustment function. Notice 49 also provides facilitation: items under 9A012.a.1 may obtain an export certificate by registration before each export, and exhibition re-import rules apply to defence/police exhibitions.
