One is a share of fibre mass. One is a share of polymer mass. One is a mass-balance allocation from a production period that also ran virgin material. All three can be written truthfully on a datasheet, and none of them tells a design engineer what the finished part will do.

This is a practical problem now, not an academic one, because recycled content is moving out of the marketing line and into a line item in material specifications. What follows is our reading of four developments published between late October and early November 2026, and what we think they mean for anyone buying tape, prepreg or compound over the next two to three years. The facts carry sources. The conclusions are our assessment, not a statement of fact.

The Recycled Percentage Is The Least Useful Number

Recycled content is an input metric. Structural performance is an output metric, and the two are linked only through a chain of process decisions: how the fibre was recovered, how much sizing survived recovery, what the fibre length distribution looks like afterwards, and how the recovered stream was blended back into virgin material.

Take a tape laminated from fully recovered fibre, chopped to a few millimetres and formed into a mat. Now take one laminated from 30% recovered continuous tow. They are different products. The first carries an impressive recycled figure and mechanical properties that are isotropic and modest. The second carries a smaller headline number and keeps its fibre architecture along the load path. A buyer who evaluates only the percentage selects the first, then wonders why the part came out heavier than the analysis predicted.

Fibre length is the mechanism behind that. Load transfer in a discontinuous composite depends on the fibre being long enough to build stress over its embedded length. Recovery processes that shorten fibre below that threshold convert a load-bearing reinforcement into a filler with a modulus. It still contributes stiffness. It stops contributing strength in the direction that mattered. Any recycled-content claim therefore has to be read together with the form the recovered material arrives in, because that form is what sets the length.

The second thing a percentage lacks is a baseline. Recovered fibre against which virgin reference, measured on which test, at which fibre volume fraction. Without that, the number is a label rather than a specification.

Four Developments That Landed Within Two Weeks

Four data points published in the same fortnight point the same way.

Polymer-side recycling moved onto a commercial schedule. A large PPS producer disclosed a solvent-based route that dissolves PPS out of mixed waste, separates glass fibre and metal from the solution, then recrystallises the polymer. Because the process recovers the polymer itself instead of depolymerising and rebuilding it, the company reports recycled PPS with molecular weight and melting point close to virgin resin, plus a preliminary life-cycle assessment showing lower gate-to-gate emissions than virgin material. Commercial supply is targeted from 2030. The driver named in the disclosure is European end-of-life vehicle regulation (Chemical Engineering, 1 November 2026).

Recovered fibre appeared as a finished material family, not a demonstration. A recycler working with a chemical company’s Taiwan unit exhibited recycled carbon fibre in TPU as nonwoven, injection pellets and sheet, claiming higher strength without giving up flexibility, with footwear as the first market (CompositesWorld, event of 17 October 2026).

The intermediate-material shelf received the same treatment. At the Shanghai import expo, a composites manufacturer launched a closed-loop programme whose recovered-fibre line-up explicitly includes prepreg, injection pellets and thermoplastic mat, produced on a kiloton-scale automated line, with aviation interior parts made from fibre recovered from retired aircraft (China Daily and China Business, 5-6 November 2026).

And the industry put a limit on its own optimism. The official recap of a Bremen thermoplastic conference, drawing about 340 specialists, 64 presentations and abstract submissions up roughly 50% on 2024, recorded a panel conclusion worth quoting: high-rate thermoplastic airframe structures are technically mature across many applications, but larger and more highly loaded structures remain constrained by repeatable manufacturing, process monitoring, quality assurance and certification. A single successful demonstrator is not production capability (Composites United, conference of 28-29 October 2026).

Why Automotive Rules Will Get There First

Note which regulation gets named in the first item: not aerospace, and not consumer electronics, but end-of-life vehicles.

That sequencing matters. Automotive is the channel where recycled content is written as an obligation on the material that goes into the part, and where the obligation is audited at the converter rather than at the brand. Aerospace moves more slowly, and the conference recap above explains precisely why. Qualification is the gate, not material availability.

So the pressure path runs from automotive inward. A compounder asked to declare recycled content on an injection-moulded bracket passes the same request up its own supply chain, to the pellet supplier, and from there to the tape or prepreg supplier. Anyone selling into both automotive and industrial channels should expect the automotive paperwork to define what the industrial customer asks for roughly eighteen months later. That is our judgement, not a published finding.

One more thing to prepare for. Once recycled content is audited, polymer and fibre get counted separately. PPS recovered by solvent dissolution and carbon fibre recovered by pyrolysis are two different claims, verified by two different methods, and they cannot be added into one percentage without saying which is which.

Three Claims, One Word

Before writing a requirement, separate the three things a supplier might mean by the same phrase. This is the working vocabulary we use when a customer asks what a recycled figure covers.

Two of the three describe material physically in the roll. Mass balance is legitimate and widely used, but it allows a physical shipment to contain no recovered material at all while its paperwork carries a recycled figure. That is not misrepresentation. It is a chain-of-custody convention, and it is auditable. It does mean that “is there recovered material in this roll?” and “what recycled content does this roll carry?” have different answers, and a specification has to say which one it is asking for.

Recycled content is also not a recyclability claim, although the two get bundled together in conversation. A part can be made from fully virgin material and still be easy to recycle, because the matrix melts and the reinforcement can be separated. It can also carry a high recycled figure and be difficult to recover if it is bonded to a thermoset skin or encapsulated in foam. The two properties get measured by different people at different stages of life.

What To Write Into The Specification

Five items turn a recycled-content claim into something a quality engineer can accept. None of them needs new test equipment if the supplier already characterises its material for other reasons.

The basis of the figure. Fibre mass, polymer mass, or mass balance, and the scope: this batch, this production period, or this product family. Three different answers can all be correct and all be useless if the basis is unstated.

The form of the recovered stream. Continuous tow, chopped strand, milled fibre, nonwoven mat, or reground compound. This one line predicts most of the mechanical difference, and it is the line most often missing from a datasheet.

Property retention against a named virgin baseline. Not an absolute value on its own. Tensile and flexural results, interlaminar shear where the part is loaded through thickness, and the fibre volume fraction at which both were measured.

Batch traceability on the recovered stream. Recovered fibre varies more than virgin fibre because the input waste varies. A batch number linking a roll to its recovered-material lot is the minimum, and it is what makes an audit survivable.

Which allowables get re-qualified, and who pays. If recovered content shifts the statistical basis of a design allowable, that is a qualification cost. It belongs in the commercial terms, not in a surprise six months later.

Our read on timing: within 24 to 36 months, recycled content will be requested at the intermediate level, on the tape, the prepreg and the pellet, rather than at the fibre level, and the differentiator will be documentation of retention and traceability rather than the headline percentage. Suppliers who can answer the five items above on a single page will hold the specification. Suppliers who can only quote a percentage will be compared on that percentage alone. This is a judgement built from the developments above, not a forecast we can verify.

One point is concrete enough to act on now. Thermoplastic matrices melt, so trim, offcuts and rejected laminates from our own CF/PPS, CF/PA6 and CF/TPU families can be reground and reused in-process, and the same property holds at a customer’s plant. If a recycled-content clause is heading your way, the useful first step is knowing what your own scrap stream is worth, not waiting for a supplier declaration to arrive.

We supply thermoplastic prepregs and unidirectional tape in CF/PPS, CF/PA6, CF/PA12, CF/PP, CF/PC and CF/TPU, with areal weight and resin content reported on each roll and traceable to batch. If you are drafting a recycled-content clause and want to know what our current grades can document, send the requirement through our contact form.
