A Chinese eVTOL developer confirmed that the first unit of its X3-F had been handed to a low-altitude flight demonstration zone in Ras Al Khaimah, the United Arab Emirates, with cumulative orders above 7,000 aircraft. The flight body is a six-rotor, dual-duct two-seater built on a carbon fibre primary structure, with folding arms and blades. Its Guangzhou plant is planned at 10,000 units a year, starting at 5,000, with series delivery targeted from mid-2027 (Hubei Daily, 30 October 2026).

What the Order Books Say, and What They Leave Out

The same week, a second developer confirmed an eVTOL base in Wuhan’s Optics Valley. That company was founded in 2023 by a team drawn from the ARJ21 and C919 programmes. It holds 860 aircraft on order across operators, leasing firms and tourism buyers, and is pushing its cargo variant through airworthiness certification. The bonded zone beside it is planning roughly 137,000 square metres of low-altitude equipment manufacturing space, and it is openly recruiting composites suppliers (Jimu News, 30 October 2026).

Neither announcement contains a ply schedule. No fibre areal weight, no resin system, no void limit, no qualification basis. Order books describe demand. A specification is a different document, and the space between the two is where a material supplier either joins a programme or stays a sample sender.

That space is also where accounts are lost quietly, and usually without an argument. A data sheet quoting peak tensile strength gets a polite reply. A roll-level record that matches the ply the customer already qualified gets a purchase order.

An eVTOL Airframe Is a Stiffness Problem First

The instinct is to treat these aircraft as small helicopters or large drones and specify them accordingly. The load case that actually drives the design differs in four ways.

Point loads land on thin shells. Rotor and propulsor loads arrive concentrated at hard points on skins and booms. A boom carrying a rotor has to keep its natural frequencies clear of the excitation orders across the whole RPM range, or whirl flutter appears. That is a stiffness target measured in hertz, not a strength target measured in megapascals. Stiffness comes from modulus and from how far the plies sit from the neutral axis, which is why adding thickness is such an expensive way to solve it.

A hinge line cuts the load path. Folding arms put the highest bending and torsion into a short region at the arm root. Plies at plus and minus 45 degrees usually have to carry the shear and torsion there. A laminate built only at 0 and 90 degrees can look adequate in a hand calculation and behave badly in service.

Fatigue runs on a different spectrum. eVTOL duty cycles are many short flights, so the structure accumulates a high cycle count at low stress amplitude. In carbon fibre laminates that regime is governed by matrix and interlaminar behaviour under compression. Fibre tensile strength barely features. Select a material on fibre properties and you have chosen on the wrong variable.

Damage tolerance sets the certification case. Folding arms get dropped, bumped in hangars, hit by hail. Thin laminates show barely visible impact damage, and residual compression strength after impact is what the certification basis cares about. That number comes from resin toughness and consolidation quality. It does not come from the fibre.

One more constraint shapes purchasing rather than design. Composite airframe means of compliance rest on allowables derived from coupon testing, so the material has to hold steady from batch to batch. A supplier whose rolls wander a few percent in resin content fails the customer’s statistical basis long before anyone argues about peak properties.

Where the Material Decision Actually Gets Made

Most near-term eVTOL parts are secondary structures: fairings, arm skins, floor panels, seat frames, battery enclosure covers, access panels. They combine compound curvature, moderate load and a hard pull toward short cycle times, which narrows the material decision to five questions.

Woven or unidirectional comes first. Woven cloth drapes over compound curvature without wrinkling and gives balanced in-plane properties in a single ply. The crimp costs in-plane modulus against a unidirectional tape at the same fibre volume fraction. That makes cloth the wrong choice for a stiffness-critical boom cap and the right one for a skin that has to follow a double-curved surface. Most real laminates use both, in different zones.

Then tow count. A 3K cloth builds thin plies with fine surface definition and tight radius formability. 12K and 24K build thickness faster and cut layup time on larger parts. Neither is better. A 4 mm skin with a tight leading edge and a 15 mm spar cap need different tow counts, which is why we weave across 3K to 24K instead of pushing one size.

Areal weight decides how finely the laminate can be tuned. Between 50 and 600 g/m² the choice sets single-ply thickness and resin uptake. Thin plies near the surface raise the impact damage threshold. Heavier plies cut ply count and labour, at the cost of a coarser design instrument.

Width is a nesting question that turns into a quality question. At 1270 mm maximum fabric width, a large doubler or arm skin can be cut in fewer pieces. Fewer seams means fewer overlaps, fewer thickness transitions, fewer places for a void to hide.

Resin system is last on the list and usually first in the argument. Mid-temperature thermoplastics such as CF/PA6 and CF/PPS run on conventional tooling with short cycles, and they can be re-formed. CF/PAEK buys service temperature and solvent resistance, then charges for it with a narrow process window and much more demanding tooling. For non-primary parts at thousands of units a year, cycle time tends to win.

The four systems below cover most of what an eVTOL programme asks for at this stage. The last column is where programmes get stuck.

Material system

Process route

Where it fits

Where it gets stuck

Woven carbon cloth with epoxy prepreg

Autoclave or press, thermoset cure

Skins, fairings and doublers that must follow compound curvature

Cure cycle and out-time control across a long layup

CF/PA6 unidirectional tape

Melt processing, then press or automated placement

Arm skins, floor panels, brackets and other stiffness-driven parts

Moisture picked up before processing; uneven tool temperature

CF/PPS

Fast melt cycles on conventional tooling

Access panels, clips, parts that need chemical resistance

Crystallinity control, and limits on welded joints

CF/PAEK (PEEK)

High-temperature melt processing

Service-temperature brackets and wear parts near hot equipment

Tooling cost, and a narrow process window to hold

Rows match the four systems discussed above. At 5,000 to 10,000 units a year, a process that cannot be cycled in minutes per part does not fit the factory. Secondary parts are where a new material gets proven without reopening a certification basis.

Woven cloth demand moves before tape demand. Near-term parts have compound curvature and moderate load, which is woven territory. Tape volume follows once primary load paths move to thermoplastic, and that conversation is further out than most suppliers are planning for.

The order figures deserve caution. Seven thousand orders is a demand signal, not a delivery schedule. Programme slippage is normal in this segment, and mid-2027 is a target rather than a commitment. Planning capacity against the lower production figure is the more defensible choice.

Export paperwork is turning into part of the material offer. Licensing already covers certain carbon fibre goods and unmanned aircraft blade items, with the relevant measures taking effect on 18 November 2026, and a further enforcement procedure open for comment until 29 November (Ministry of Commerce, 30 October 2026). Buyers have started asking at RFQ stage which classification a quoted fabric falls under and who holds the end-use declaration. A supplier who cannot answer that becomes a scheduling risk, however good the laminate.

What to Put in the Specification Now

If you are writing the material specification for an eVTOL structure this quarter, these are the items that decide whether the laminate behaves as designed:

Fibre areal weight and its tolerance on each roll, not on each batch

Resin content tolerance, with the measurement method written beside it

Void content limit and the inspection method used to demonstrate it

Fabric width, selvage condition and splice rules

Sizing or binder compatibility with the resin you will actually run

Ply-level mechanical allowables tested on your own consolidation route

Storage, out-time and re-drying rules carried into the purchase order

None of that is exciting. All of it is cheaper to settle before the first coupon than after the first conformity test fails.

We weave carbon fibre cloth from 3K to 24K in plain, twill and satin, at 50 to 600 g/m² and up to 1270 mm wide. If you are building a ply schedule for an arm skin or a fairing, send the target areal weight, the resin system and the curvature. We will answer with data for that construction rather than a family brochure.

丹阳理兴碳素制品有限公司 supplies carbon fibre fabric, thermoplastic prepreg and continuous fibre products from Danyang, Jiangsu.
