Nine-month revenue across the six rose about 1.7 per cent. Net profit fell about 37 per cent. In the quarter itself, revenue was up roughly 2 per cent and profit down roughly 46 per cent. One company escaped the pattern: an aerospace materials supplier whose filing credits “growth in prepreg deliveries” and shows gross margin up about eight points quarter on quarter. If you buy carbon fiber prepreg, that split is the most useful figure published this quarter, because it says where the money in this chain now sits.

What the Third-Quarter Filings Actually Show

The aggregate hides more than it shows. Six producers, results filed between 22 and 28 October 2026, nine-month revenue barely moving, profit down by more than a third. Read as an industry average, that looks like a demand problem. It is not one. Volume held up. What fell was the money retained per kilogram of fibre sold.

Remove the one supplier that sells into aerospace programmes and the distribution turns ugly. The other five booked roughly 4 million yuan of net profit for the quarter between them. A year earlier, the same five booked about 343 million yuan.

At the far end of that distribution sits a high-modulus fibre producer: nine-month revenue down about 69 per cent, third-quarter revenue down about 85 per cent, a net loss for the period. Its fibre is not the problem and neither is its process. Its exposure is. When the product is a tow with a published datasheet, and the order book leans on a handful of industrial programmes, there is nothing standing between a demand pause and the income statement.

The one that grew did it in a specific place. Third-quarter revenue up about 21.7 per cent, net profit up about 43 per cent, gross margin around 39.7 per cent against roughly 31.2 per cent in the preceding quarter. The filing names the cause without hedging: prepreg deliveries. Not fibre shipments, not a new plant. The stage where fibre becomes a specified, cuttable, layup-ready material.

Why the Fibre Stage Stopped Setting the Price

A tow is about the easiest thing in this industry to specify. Linear density, tensile strength, modulus, sizing compatibility, package size. Two suppliers holding the same certificate of analysis are, for most industrial purposes, interchangeable, and interchangeability is the precondition for a commodity. Put capacity on a schedule as well (a Korean producer announced a three-site expansion on 27 October 2026 targeting 2028; domestic carbonisation lines keep coming on stream) and the negotiation reduces to volume, payment terms and whether the truck arrives.

Impregnation does not reduce that way. A prepreg is not one number. It is a resin system, a fibre architecture, an areal weight, a resin content with a tolerance, a width with a tolerance, a volatile content, a degree of impregnation, and a roll-length consistency that decides whether your automated cutter runs a shift without a splice alarm. Two suppliers can match on the headline values and behave nothing alike on a real line. That gap is what a buyer is paying for, whether or not the RFQ says so.

Stage

What sets the number

What a buyer can control

Fibre tow

Published datasheet values. The split between stages is our analysis, not a statement of fact.

What Buyers Are Really Paying For at the Prepreg Stage

Six properties do most of the work. Five of them are usually missing from the quotation table.

Areal weight, and its variation. The nominal figure, say 200 g/m², is the easy part. The coefficient of variation across a roll decides whether your laminate thickness drifts and whether the ply book survives the tenth batch. Ask for the spread, not the target.

Resin content tolerance. A few points of resin content moves void content, moves mechanical properties, and moves the mass of the finished part. A tolerance quoted as one figure with no measurement method attached is not a tolerance. It is a wish.

Width and slit quality. Especially for tape. Fibre-free edges, width tolerance, and whether the slit is clean enough for automated placement. Two millimetres of wander is invisible on a sample and expensive on a tape-laying head.

Lot-to-lot consistency. The property that never appears in a datasheet and always appears in a production complaint. It cannot be inspected into a shipment at the end of the line. It has to be held by process control upstream, which is a different investment from buying a wider press.

Out-time and handling. Tack, drape, and how the material behaves after its fourth hour on the shop floor. This is resin rheology, not marketing, and it is the single most common reason a trial passes in the lab and fails in the cell.

Documentation. Batch traceability, measured values rather than nominal ones, and a data sheet that describes the grade supplied instead of the family it belongs to. For thermoplastic systems, add the processing window: temperature, pressure, dwell. A buyer who cannot state the window has not finished specifying.

Five Changes for Your Next RFQ

Swap the single-number comparison for a specification table. One column per supplier, one row per controlled property, including the measurement method. Once tolerances and methods sit side by side, quotes stop being comparable on headline figures and start being comparable on risk.

Ask for lot data, not just a certificate. Request the measured areal weight and resin content from the last several lots. Suppliers who track it will send numbers. Suppliers who do not will send a datasheet, which is itself an answer about their process control.

Write the acceptance criteria before the trial. Agree what counts as a failed lot, who pays for the re-test, and what happens to material that lands between two specifications. Unglamorous, and it is where most first orders go wrong.

Qualify on the process window, not the datasheet. A prepreg that laminates beautifully in a press can be unusable in a tape-laying cell. Qualification belongs to your process, so run it on your process, even at sample scale.

Dual-source by construction, not by catalogue. Two suppliers of the same nominal grade are worth much less than one supplier plus a second construction you have actually run. When supply tightens, the second construction keeps the line moving. A second name on a list does not.

What We Are Watching Over 12 to 24 Months

Two developments from the last week of October 2026 belong in the same paragraph as those filings. In Wuhan, a thermoplastic composites pilot facility in the Caidian district has completed construction and is expected to be in use this year, with automated fibre placement, autoclave and prepreg equipment already installed; the stated target is aircraft fuselage panels, extending into low-altitude vehicles and automotive parts (Changjiang Daily, 30 October 2026). In Beijing, two new materials pilot platforms were approved, one covering automated cutting, rapid preforming and large-part HP-RTM, the other covering thermoplastic automated fibre placement, winding and pultrusion (Development Beijing, October 2026).

Set beside the quarterly results, the direction is consistent. Fibre is being industrialised as a commodity. Conversion — impregnation, tape, laminate, preform — is where qualification accumulates, and qualification is what protects a margin. This is our assessment, not a statement of fact.

Our expectation, written down so it can be checked later: as domestic pilot capacity turns into production capacity, supply of standard thermoplastic sheet and commodity prepreg widens first, and competition at the low end of that range arrives earlier than most buying plans currently assume. High areal weight, wide format, and resin systems that are awkward to run (PPS, PAEK, the higher-temperature polyamides) stay tight for longer, because they are limited by process knowledge rather than by fibre. Again, assessment rather than fact.

What that means in practice is unromantic. The specification work you do now is the only lever that survives a capacity wave. A buyer holding documented tolerances, two qualified constructions and a known processing window for each is in a different negotiation from a buyer holding three quotes on the same nominal grade.

If you are in the middle of that specification work, our thermoplastic prepreg range covers CF/PP, CF/PA6, CF/PA12, CF/PPS and CF/PAEK, alongside carbon fibre fabric from 50 to 600 g/m² and up to 1,270 mm wide, and machinable laminates in 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 mm. Send the fibre architecture, the areal weight, the resin system and the process you intend to run. We will answer with data for that construction rather than a family brochure.

丹阳理兴碳素制品有限公司 supplies carbon fibre fabric, thermoplastic prepreg and continuous fibre products from Danyang, Jiangsu.
