Published by Polymer Composites (Wiley, Early View), the research compares two routes to make rCF-reinforced PA6 nonwoven thermoplastic laminates — and the difference is dramatic.

Powder impregnation vs. blended fibers: a head-to-head

The study builds four-layer laminates from two precursor systems: powder-impregnated (PA6/rCF_p) and intimately blended hybrid fibers (PA6/rCF_hy), consolidated at 270/285°C under 5/10 bar.

Powder impregnation: pressure is the dominant process variable. Raising 5→10 bar cuts porosity from ~11% to ~5%. Best result (285°C, 10 bar): Young’s modulus 18.3 GPa, tensile strength 286 MPa.

Blended fibers: uneven precursor distribution keeps porosity at 15–26%, with much lower properties — modulus 11.7 GPa, strength 119 MPa.

A rule-of-mixtures model with a porosity correction factor predicts the powder system’s performance within ±6%, confirming that precursor uniformity is the essential precondition for effective consolidation.

What this means for recycled-carbon intermediates

If you are specifying rCF/PA6 nonwoven or prepreg laminates, the impregnation route matters as much as the fiber — powder-impregnated precursors deliver consistently lower porosity and higher mechanicals.

For automotive and industrial lightweighting programs evaluating recycled content, this is a defensible, data-backed selection criterion.

It also sharpens supplier qualification: uniform precursor quality (nonwoven/prepreg form) is a first-order control point, not a nice-to-have.

About LX Composites

理兴复合材料 supplies continuous carbon, glass and aramid woven fabrics, UD fabrics and tapes, thermoset and thermoplastic prepregs, and consolidated thermoplastic laminates for aerospace, automotive, marine, sports, industrial and energy customers worldwide.
